Testing and Verification: E5 Product Performance

This article provides a summary of third-party test data that verifies the performance of E5® admixtures across several key durability metrics. The following data is extracted from the official E5 Submittal Packages and demonstrates compliance with industry-standard testing protocols.

Applies to: E5® Internal Cure®, E5® Catalyst™

Abrasion Resistance

ASTM C944 - Standard Test Method for Abrasion Resistance

This test measures the mass loss of a concrete surface after being subjected to a standardized abrasive force. The results show that the combination of E5 Internal Cure® and E5 Catalyst™ significantly reduces material loss, indicating a much harder and more durable surface.

E5 INTERNAL CURE Mass Loss

E5 INTERNAL CURE + E5 CATALYST Mass Loss

LOSS AVERAGE

1.2 g

0.7 g

Conclusion: The E5 system loses approximately 42% less material than concrete treated with E5 Internal Cure alone, and is more than 3.5 times more resistant to abrasion than the industry standard of 2.5g loss.

BS 8204: 1987 (Chaplin Abrasion Test)

This rigorous test classifies the wear resistance of concrete floors. The E5 Internal Cure® treated surface achieved the highest possible classification.

Freeze-Thaw Durability

ASTM C666 - Resistance to Rapid Freezing and Thawing

This test measures a concrete sample's ability to withstand 300 cycles of freezing and thawing. The primary metric is the durability factor, with a minimum of 80 required for compliance.

E5 Internal Cure

4.0 oz/100wt

Air content: 4.0%

Durability factor: 89

Conclusion: The E5 Internal Cure® treated concrete achieved a durability factor of 89, comfortably exceeding the minimum requirement of 80. This demonstrates its excellent performance in freeze-thaw environments, even with a lower-than-standard air content of 4.0%.

Moisture Retention & Curing

ASTM C309 & C1315

These standards measure the moisture retention capabilities of a curing compound. E5 Internal Cure® meets these requirements through its internal curing mechanism, eliminating the need for topical products.

ASTM F1869

This standard measures evaporation loss. E5 Internal Cure® demonstrates significant reduction in evaporation within the first 72 hours, confirming its effectiveness in retaining mix water for hydration.

Compliance & Warranty

  • ASTM C494: E5 Internal Cure® meets the requirements for a Type S, Specific Performance Admixture.
  • Lifetime Warranty: The E5 Moisture Mitigation System, which combines E5 Internal Cure® and E5 Catalyst™, is backed by a 10-year limited lifetime warranty against flooring adhesive failure due to moisture migration.
