About Republic Services

Republic Services is a U.S.-based provider of recycling and solid waste services that supports communities and commercial operations through collection, processing, and related environmental solutions. With a nationwide footprint, the company’s facilities operate in high-wear, high-traffic conditions where concrete performance and uptime matter. Their work environments often expose slabs to heavy loads, abrasion, and demanding daily use—making long-term durability a critical part of operational reliability.

The Challenge

Republic Services’ Mobile facility operates in a punishing environment where heavy equipment and constant movement accelerate surface wear. Over time, severe abrasion can break down conventional slab surfaces, leading to deterioration that disrupts operations and drives replacement costs.

In this case, the original concrete slab was deteriorating to the point it required replacement about every three years. The replacement slab needed to withstand aggressive service conditions while also being placed and cured reliably during hot-weather construction windows.

The E5 Solution

To build a slab designed for continuous abrasion and demanding site conditions, the project team integrated E5® Internal Cure into a high-strength concrete design. The intent was to improve curing performance during placement and deliver a denser slab surface capable of resisting heavy wear.

E5® Internal Cure was used to support internal curing and hydration performance—especially important during hot-weather placement—helping the slab develop a more durable matrix. The overall approach focused on extending service life, improving operational uptime, and reducing the recurring cost cycle of premature slab replacement.

Products Used

Built-In Performance: The E5® System Behind the Results. This project’s outcomes weren’t accidental—they were engineered into the slab. By pairing the right admixtures and surface systems, we delivered internal curing, faster access, and a harder, more resilient finish that stands up to real-world demands.

E5® Internal Cure

A liquid admixture used to improve internal curing performance and support hydration efficiency—especially valuable during hot-weather placements where premature moisture loss can compromise long-term durability. In this project, it was paired with a high-strength mix design to help produce a denser, more wear-resistant slab surface intended to hold up under heavy equipment and nonstop facility traffic.

Schedule / Execution

The project involved replacing a deteriorated slab under real-world constraints—where timing, placement conditions, and curing reliability directly affect performance. Bayou Concrete integrated E5® Internal Cure with a high-strength concrete mix (including structural fibers) to support durability objectives. E5® Internal Cure was also used specifically to support curing performance during a hot-weather placement window, helping reduce the risk profile associated with rapid moisture loss and finishing challenges.

Performance Needs

The replacement slab needed to withstand extreme abrasion from heavy equipment and continuous daily use without rapidly degrading. Abrasion resistance was a core requirement, and performance validation was confirmed through recognized testing methods used to evaluate wear resistance. The goal was a slab that could maintain surface integrity longer, reduce operational disruption, and improve lifecycle outcomes in a high-wear industrial environment.

Project Overview

Republic Services partnered with ADS, LLC to replace a deteriorated concrete slab at its Mobile, Alabama facility. The operating environment created severe abrasion demands that contributed to rapid surface breakdown in the existing slab. The replacement objective was straightforward: deliver a concrete floor designed to withstand aggressive service conditions, reduce repeat replacement frequency, and improve the reliability of facility operations over time.

How E5 Elevated Performance

E5® Internal Cure was incorporated to support internal curing and hydration—key contributors to a denser slab matrix and improved resistance to wear. For this project, the benefits were tied directly to performance under heavy abrasion and to curing confidence during hot-weather placement. Abrasion resistance performance was validated through ASTM C779 and BS8204 testing, supporting the project’s goal of extending service life in a high-wear environment.
